Squirrel....We Hope....

We had a little excitement before leaving on our trip for the holidays - an unwanted guest in our chimney!

Andrew and I noticed something making a raucous in there, and thought it was the wind at first.  But does the wind have long nails that make scratching sounds?  Not so much....

We decided that our best bet would be to open the flue, let it (we were hoping it was a squirrel) into the house and make sure it found its way outside quickly.  Here's what we came up with:

Only problem, SOMEONE (I guess I should say, something) didn't feel like cooperating.  We opened the flue, turned off all the lights, and left the room (except for me who stayed very quietly to watch).  No dice.  We even put food out to tempt it.  It would still claw around in there, but wouldn't come down.  We finally gave up for the night when it got dark, shut the flue and called it a day.

That thing went nuts that night - poor little guy.  It was very cold so I'm sure his/her stay in our chimney was not very pleasant.  The next day, we tried again, but it still wouldn't come out.

So here's the not so happy end to this little story - we had to leave on our trip, never got the thing out, and assume it met its demise in the chimney.  But the time I got home over two weeks later, there was no sign (or smell) of it.  I like to tell myself it found its way out the top.....
