Abigail Gets Hearing Aids!

On Monday, August 27th, Abigail and I went to the ENT to finally get her hearing aids!

The hearing aid in her right ear includes a purple glitter piece that plugs the ear.  That's the side with the nerve damage from the tumor, so sound goes in, just isn't processed correctly in the brain and can sometimes create confusion.  So they just decided to plug that ear completely.  On the back of the ear is a little microphone piece that picks up sound on that side and.....

....transmits it to the receiver on her left ear.  So left ear can now do all the hearing.

She was super excited to get them and kept having me whisper things in her right ear, so thrilled that she could now hear it!

And she got her very own case to hold them in when she takes them out at night!

Unfortunately, the initial excitement wore of quickly - too quickly.  She's not used to having stuff in her ears and pulls them out constantly.  It's an ongoing battle to make her wear them, and honestly, so far, we haven't noticed a huge difference in her hearing.  Her left ear was doing so much compensating before, that the change just isn't very noticeable.  One day, we heard her in the living room, crying to herself that, "I don't like my hearing aids!  I never want to wear them again!" Etc.  It was so sad!  We're just concerned that she'll need them more once she starts school next year so she may as well get used to them now?

And then two days ago at Costco, Abigail apparently pulled the left side out somewhere in the store and lost it.  I still need to call the ENT and see about a replacement, but for now, the hearing aids are on hold until further notice.  On side doesn't do much good on it's own!  More to come in this ongoing saga.....
