On Monday, the 17th, while Mom and I were out running errands, my water started leaking, around 4:45pm. When we got home, Andrew and I gathered things up and headed to the hospital. Finally!
We arrived at 5:30pm and I was 5cm dilated. I made sure to be very vocal about the natural birth disaster that happened with Cora and repeatedly requested a speedy epidural!
And by 6:30, I had the epidural! Although it didn't start working until around 7:30pm when I was 6 cm dilated. We had a couple hours of just hanging out waiting. When they checked me at 10:10pm, I was 8 cm dilated.
Unfortunately, the baby was face up (or down? - whichever one they don't want), so in an attempt to help him move, they had me change positions and use a peanut. And that's when the epidural stopped working. Everything became super painful and despite their repeated attempts to contact the anesthesiologist, there was no response and I was in major pain for the duration. The bad contractions started around 10:40 and when they checked me at 11:03pm, they declared it was baby time! 4 pushes later, he was born at 11:09pm!
We did an hour of skin to skin and baby boy fussed at me the whole time! :(
(And for a good deal of that time, the doctors were trying to get the placenta out - without much luck. They were started to get worried, but finally got it out at 11:40.)
We tried nursing for the first time at 12am and neither of us was a big fan.
12:10 was time for his first check! Baby boy was 10 lbs, 11 oz and 20" long. His head was 14 3/4".
And finally at 12:26am, Andrew got to hold the baby! And of course, no fussing for Daddy! He liked being held by Andrew.
Baby boy discovered his thumb right away!
At 1:45am we finally moved to our room and by 2:15am were ready to get some much needed sleep!
Andrew helped with middle of the night feedings so I could rest - what a guy!
I think he's a keeper!
Found the thumb again?! We'd be substituting in the pacifier as soon as we got home and away from the judging eyes at the hospital.
Andrew went home early in the morning to help Grandma with the girls. We'd told them they could stay home from school that day because none of us had the energy to get them there :) So baby and I had some alone time - and we survived!
That morning Eve had an appointment with the ortho at the hospital, so after Andrew took her to that (and we got reprimanded for her not wearing her braces and threatened with immediate surgery if she didn't start wearing them), the two of them came for a quick visit to meet......baby Seth! (Andrew and I had settled on the name before introducing him to family.)
Eve was a fan, even if his name wasn't Owen, like she wanted ;)
She's a natural!
Grandma Larsen and Aunt Kelly sent flowers and a puppy! Every boy needs a puppy...
After they left, Seth and I had some more alone time, including his first poopy diaper for Mom. At 11:45, I heard him poop and in panic I looked around for assistance, but found myself alone. Shouldn't there be an instruction manual or something??? But alas, I had to make do without and we both survived the ordeal. One boy diaper down, thousands to go....
That afternoon, Grandma and big sisters came to visit!
Everyone got a turn to hold Seth!
The girls quickly became distracted by the TV so Grandma took over! Unfortunately, she was leaving the next day so her baby holding time would be limited.
This is what a family a 7 looks like.
Halle got to have another turn, because we didn't get a good picture during her first time.
These big sisters love their baby brother!
And who can blame them? He's pretty lovable!
Told you they just wanted to watch TV.
Fine with Grandma!
More quiet time for Seth and I when the family headed home.
It's exhausting being a baby!
Just like Eve as a baby, he doubts my ability and wonders if I know what I'm doing. (And no, I don't.)
His newborn screen was at midnight and he weight 10 lbs 3 oz. Not much weight loss for this chunk!
The morning of the 19th, Andrew brought Grandma (and the younger girls) to see Seth one more time on the way to drop Grandma at the airport. How can she be leaving already???
Get those out of your mouth! But it is pretty cute....
After they left to take Grandma to the airport, the pediatrician came to do Seth's circumcision, at 11:35am. He was back in the room around noon, poor boy.
But at 12:20pm when I told him it was time to go home, he was super excited!
Come and get us, Daddy, we're ready!
