One of the nurses at the hospital, Brooke, recommended Abigail for the Amarillo Fire Department's Fire Chief for a Day program. Each September, in honor of childhood cancer awareness, the Fire Department selects one child to be chief for a day and for September 2019, Abigail was selected!
To issue the invitation, they had a special presentation planned at her school and all the kids in the school were encouraged to wear yellow to show support! Eve and Halle were ready!
The morning of Monday, September 16th, the whole school came outside for a surprise! The whole school except Halle's class, that is. Her teacher knew it was for Halle's sister, and still their class was the only class there late and Halle missed the helicopter! The copter flew in over the school, landed in the field, and dropped off Sparky, the Fire Department's mascot! Then the helicopter took off and flew away. The kids were cheering so loudly! Andrew, me, Cora, and Seth were there for the occasion!
After the helicopter left, the firemen asked if Abigail Smith would come forward!
They announced that that coming Friday, the 20th, Abigail would be the honorary fire chief and gave her a fire department shirt and her very own firefighter uniform!
These two teachers were so sweet to watch Cora and Seth so Andrew and I could participate with Abigail (and take pictures!).
Her sisters were so proud of her and super sweet!
Abigail was a little shy about the whole thing at first, but that didn't last long!
Next, while the school watched, we headed across the field to where a fire truck was parked.
And the girls got to spray the fire hoses! (With a little help.)
Cora was busy talking Sparky's ear off :)
Headed back with Mrs. McCready (Abigail's teacher) and one of Eve's teachers.
The students all gave a big cheer for Abigail before heading back into class.
These girls loved Sparky!
Even Seth was cautiously interested!
The reporters interviewed Abigail and Andrew and I (and luckily nothing I said made it on to the news that night because I sounded super dumb. Andrew did a good job.)
Kyle Joy was the fire fighter who arranged the whole thing and he did such a good job! Abigail was so happy and we were all really looking forward to Friday!
