Them's the Breaks

Three weeks ago, on Saturday, 2/21, I broke my foot!

I was exercising at home (the challenge requires 30 mins of exercise per day), doing mountain climbers which involve high knee jumping combined with pumping your arms.  Without realizing it, I was slowly moving backwards as I jumped and as my left foot came down from one jump, my heel hit the front of the couch and my toes hit the floor, twisting my ankle as I fell.  The pain was sharp and instantaneous.  I was writhing on the in pain as Eve looked on.  My cries woke Andrew up and he ran downstairs to help me.  I couldn't move for a few mins, but when I could, he helped me to the couch where I spent the rest of the day with my foot propped up and iced.  It was very painful, but there were no bones sticking out, so I figured I'd just twisted it.  It was swollen, but not ridiculously so.  I sat out Sunday as well, which was a little more difficult.  I couldn't walk on that foot at all, but could get around the house by hopping and up the stairs by crawling.  Halle and Abigail were sick, so I stayed home from church with them and Andrew took Eve to church.  Getting them all baths that morning was quite a feat while Andrew was at meetings.  But we did it!

It's crazy how hard things are when you're down one foot.  I couldn't walk and carry the baby so when it was her nap time, I had to crawl up the stairs with her tucked under one arm (Andrew and Eve were still at church).  It took a long time!  Anyway, that's how I spent Sunday - hopping around when I had to, but mostly sitting with my foot propped up.

By Sunday evening, Andrew and my dad had convinced me that I should go get it looked at.  Just to make sure.  So I made up my mind to go in Monday morning to have it checked.  I obviously couldn't go to work with it like this!  Especially since I take the train and have to walk for 3 blocks to my building!  But that night is when the ice storm hit.  So Monday morning, the city was covered in ice.  We called our doctor to see if they were open, but got no answer.  Their message didn't say they were closed, so I decided to chance it.  Andrew stayed with the girls while I drove myself to the doctor on roads of ice.  When I got there, I found a hand written note taped to their door that they were closed due to weather.  Ah!  So back home I went.  There was no way I was going to the ER for something like this, so I just had to wait until they were open.

I did a lot of hopping again on Monday.  At one point, without paying attention, I'd hopped down through our sunken living room and when I got all the way across the room to the step up to the family room, I stopped.  I was trying to decide if I should chance a one foot hop up the step and risk falling when Eve, who was watching me, in a very serious voice suggested, "you could crawl".  Haha, that's what I ended up doing....

I tried again to go in to the doctor first thing Tuesday morning to find ANOTHER note taped to the door that due to the weather, they wouldn't be opening until 10am.  Try updating your phone message, people!  So back home to wait until 10am when I finally got in and because of the swelling and bruising, got x-rays.  It turns out that I'd sprained the top of my foot, just where the foot meets the ankle and broken my foot on the outside side.  It was a minor fracture, where a piece of bone had actually broken off and was just sitting there, I guess?

Anyway, they sent me across the street to see an ortho who put me in a walking boot for a month.

Overall, I was glad!  I was going to be pretty upset if I went in and paid all that money just to find out that nothing was wrong.  But I also wasn't interested in a major problem that required a real cast or surgery.  I hit the sweet spot!  I feel like I got my money's worth, without it being anything too serious.

It's been quite an adventure since then, but overall, it's finally healing!  People make fun of me at work, but it's always a good way to get sympathy too.  Especially if my boss asks me to do something I don't want to.  I just put on a sad face and absently rub my leg and they cave!  I'll have to remember this trick and keep the boot on hand for future use....

Anyway, it's been three weeks now.  The hardest part has been continuing the challenge with a broken foot.  All I want to do it sit on the couch and be pampered with sweets!  Instead, I've had to find more creative ways to get my 30 mins of exercise in every day - lots of abs and arms!  Today I start at-home rubber band exercises they've given me to strengthen my ankle/foot and in one week I can start to phase the boot out.  Hopefully it's fully healed soon!

Serves me right for exercising!  ;)

Snow!

Winter decided to pay Dallas a visit the last couple of weeks in February.  And it was cold!!!

We started out with an ice storm that basically shut the city down for a couple of days.  The girls kept asking to play outside and I had to explain the difference between ice and snow.  Can't play outside in ice!

But before long, they got their wish and on two separate days we got a couple of inches of snow and they bundled up and went out!

First time around:

Second time around a few days later:

Over all, it was a lot of working from home for me, which was just fine!  It was fun while it lasted, but now we're ready for spring...

Abigail at 9 Months

I really tried my best to get good 9 months pictures of Abigail, but that girl is constantly on the move so most of what I got where blurry.  She sure doesn't like to hold still!

Abigail started climbing stairs sometime between 8 and 9 months - Andrew just found her halfway up the stairs on the landing one day!  We've since started putting up a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, but anytime we forget, she books it straight up.  No falls as of yet....

Here are some stats about Abigail at this age:

- Weighs 21 lbs 13 oz, 92nd percentile
-28.25 inches tall, 66th percentile
-I don't remember the measurements, but head in the 90th percentile
-She has started to wave and we love it!
-As I mentioned, won't hold still to save her life
-Very close to standing on her own; will pull up to a stand on anything she can get her hands on, and barely holds on to support herself
-Now her darker side: is becoming a worse and worse sleeper - we're very nearly at our wits end with her!  She wakes up at least three times a night crying and won't be quiet after about 3 - 4am without a bottle, then she'll go back to sleep until 7 or 8am.  We're both so tired!  It's a good thing she's so cute!
Who can stay mad at that face?

She loves to camp out by the front door and play with everyone's shoes (and eat them!).  And she'll follow her sisters wherever she can.

Oh, and she refuses to touch baby food of any kind.  I may have mentioned that in her 8 month post.  She is strictly table food now and will hardly even drink her formula.  And she constantly has her tongue hanging out of her mouth.  She's a silly, adorable, busy baby and we love her!

St. Valentine's

Our Valentine's Day was nothing if not full of chocolate!  Doesn't get better than that ;)

We started the morning with some pink chocolate chip pancakes - messy and satisfying!

For our treats, we'd ordered some surprises from the young women in our ward who were doing a fundraiser for girls' camp.  The girls got chocolate lollipops and princess shoes and Andrew and I got heart shaped chocolate chips cookies and brownies.  Yum!

We had a busy day - Andrew helped someone move and I took the girls to the park.  Andrew met us there when he was done with the move and we had fun playing.  Besides that, we did our typical Saturday cleaning, shopping, and laundry.

Since I knew we didn't have an outing planned for that evening, I'd signed up to feed the missionaries.  It was the only day in February where someone hadn't already volunteered.  Go figure :)  It turned out to be more than I'd bargained for!  No knock on our missionaries, because they are awesome, the girls love them, and we very much enjoy having them over.  But this particular evening was a perfect storm of awfulness!  We'd planned dinner for 5pm and I was making lasagna, french bread, broccoli with cheese sauce, and salad with hot fudge brownies for dessert.  Everything was on track, except for me having time to take a shower when the missionaries called at 4:30 to say they needed to reschedule for 6:30pm.  Ah!  I took the lasagna out of the oven and put dinner on hold.  It worked out because I had time to get a few more things done, then at 5:30 I re-began making dinner.  I got everything prepped then got in the shower.  Around 6pm, just as I was finishing my shower, I hear the doorbell.  It was the missionaries!  They thought they had Andrew 6:00pm, not 6:30!  Eve graciously announced to them that, "my mom's in the shower" and Andrew told them dinner wouldn't be ready for another 30 mins.....Luckily, we have a couple of neighbors who are members of the church, one of them being an older couple, so the missionaries went to check on them.  But the time they got back at 6:30, dinner was on the table.  We had a good dinner, but they did seem to be dragging things out a bit.  Come to find out, they had no other plans for the evening (apparently no one wanted to meet with them that night) so they decided to just hang out at our house!  We served them dessert and still they lingered.  I finally put the girls in bed and hoped against hope they would leave soon.  I only wanted one thing for Valentine's Day and that was a quiet evening watching Perry Mason with Andrew while we enjoyed our hot fudge brownies.  Since I'm doing the 12 week challenge, I can't have desserts unless I use a free point and I'd saved two free points - one for dessert on Saturday night and the last point for leftover dessert on Sunday night.  I was really looking forward to my hot fudge brownie with ice cream!  But they wouldn't leave!  I was growing more desperate by the minute, watching the clock hands move closer and closer to 8:30pm.  As part of the challenge, I can't eat after 8:30pm.

They didn't leave until almost 9pm and I was very upset when we closed the door behind them.  So much for my plans :(  I ended up having to use both my remaining free points in order to have my hot fudge brownie past 8:30pm.  Which meant no dessert on Sunday.  Poor me, right?  ;)  Haha, not quite the ending to the day I'd hoped for!  But at least I got my brownie at long last....I told you our day was all about chocolate!  From beginning to end.....
