On Friday, May 29th, Eve was out in the front by herself riding her bike and then came in crying and screaming. She'd crashed on her bike by the mailbox and was screaming that her thumb hurt. Yeah, no kidding. I'm no doctor, but pretty sure it's not supposed to be crooked like that.
Andrew was at Sam's Club, but fortunately, Grandma Larsen was here and helped us all stay calm. I called the pediatrician to see where they wanted me to take her (thank you, COVID) but they didn't get back to me in time, so we just went to urgent care.
Waiting to be seen.
I wasn't sure if it was broken or dislocated, but definitely needed some attention!
X-rays revealed that it was broken and 'angulated' (their word) and would need to be looked at by a specialist. Of course, since it was now Friday afternoon, no specialists were open. So they splinted it up for her and sent us on our way.
Nothing some candy from the vending machine on our way out won't help feel better!
That weekend we kept her on pain meds and she did just fine! Monday morning, we went in to the specialist (same place I had my knee surgery) and loved the good nurses and doctors who helped her!
Lollipops and masks don't mix well.
Now that it didn't hurt much, Eve could laugh at how silly her thumb looked - complete with bruises now!
The doctor said the nature of the break would require a small surgery to place a pin to keep the bone in the right place while it healed.
We went on early, early, on Thursday morning, June 4th to the same surgery center I did my knee surgery and Seth had ears tubes placed. We're becoming regulars here! It's nice that it's like 2 minutes from our house.
All ready! Love those heated blankets they give you.
The surgeon came in and asked if he could pray with us before he took her back. It was so nice!
The surgery didn't take long and Eve did great! They didn't do any pokes until she was asleep, which she appreciated.
We just waited for her to wake up a bit and keep some food down.
Feeling good and ready to go! Pain meds are our friend!
For doing such a good job, I told her we could stop and get donuts. That cheered her up!
Lots of ice, pain meds, and rest post Eve's first surgery! First of hopefully not many. That makes 3 of the kids with who've had surgeries now.
What cheered her up the most? Blizzards that night! She's so spoiled. :) She got to keep this splint on for three weeks, then we went in again to remove the pin (in a later post), start some physical therapy, and get a smaller thumb brace to wear for another three weeks. This coming Monday, August 10th, we go in for our hopefully last appointment, just to check that it's healed completely and correctly. Fingers crossed!
The biggest drawback of Eve's injury - she couldn't jump on the tramp and so for some reason no one did for the next six weeks. Not sure why they won't jump without her?
